Gonorrhea

Gonorrhea is an infection caused by the bacteria Neisseria gonorrhoeae. Gonorrhea can lead to infection of the urethra, cervix, rectum, and throat. However, many people do not know they have gonorrhea, because although they are infected, they do not have any symptoms.

How do you know if you her?

  • Discharge from the penis
  • Pain or burning with urination or increased frequency of urination
  • Swollen and/or painful testicles
  • Infection of the rectum can occur from having receptive anal sex. Infection of the throat can occur following oral-genital sex with an infected partner. In the throat, gonorrhea may cause a sore throat.

How can you avoid her?

  • Use latex or polyurethane condoms during sex
  • Limit your number of sex partners

Can it lead to other problems?

When left untreated, gonorrhea can increase the risk of acquiring or transmitting HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. In addition, gonorrhea can enter the bloodstream, leading to an infection throughout the body, often causing pain and swelling in the joints. In men, untreated gonorrhea can affect the testicles, leading to swelling and pain. Related complications can lead to infertility. Gonorrhea can be easily treated and cured with antibiotics. Because men and women infected with gonorrhea often also have chlamydia, treatment for chlamydia is often provided as well. It is important to make sure your sex partner(s) also receive treatment, to prevent getting infected again. Don’t panic! Take control! Take the test!
